The Treasure Valley Food Coalition released this press release about the Tomato Independence Project today FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE   Contact:  Janie Burns meadowlarkfarm@q.com 208-863-6947   Tomato Independence Project seeks to End the Tyranny of Tasteless Tomatoes   Boise, Idaho – Ending the tyranny of tasteless tomatoes is the goal of a project announced today by the Treasure Valley Food Coalition (TVFC). “Eating more locally is important, but where do you start?” said Janie Burns, local farmer and chair of the organization. “Let’s focus on a food that almost everyone loves and lots of people grow already— tomatoes. Grow more here in the summer and buy less of them from out of state when they are out of season. We are chained to the idea of a tomato on our plate every day of the year, even if it tastes likes red cardboard.  Let’s be more tomato independent!” Nearly 90% of all the tomatoes eaten in the Treasure Valley are imported from California and Mexico. Every day the equivalent of three tractor trailer loads of fresh tomatoes make their way into the valley even in August when local vines are groaning with juicy tomatoes.
