About us

The Treasure Valley Food Coalition is a 501c3 non-profit organization promoting a vibrant local food economy in the Treasure Valley Food Shed of Southwestern Idaho and Eastern Oregon.  We created TVFC when we realized there was a need for a local organization to focus on the food system as a whole.

We are currently operating as a small board of volunteers.  We collaborate with businesses, educational institutions, governmental entities, non-profit organizations, and individual citizens around food system issues.

Janie Burns, Chair, has been active in providing local food for local people since 1989 when she started selling organic vegetables at Boise’s first downtown farmers’ market.  She is a charter vendor of the new Boise Farmers Market where she sells grass-fed lamb and pastured poultry raised on her 16-acre Meadowlark Farm south of Nampa.  Over the past 24 years, she has raised a wide variety of crops, sold to restaurants, CSA’s and to retail stores and participated in many events raising awareness about food system issues.

Sheryl Howe, Secretary, and her husband have lived in Boise for 24 years and enjoy hiking, backpacking, biking, skiing and gardening.  Sheryl and her family are committed to growing and purchasing local food that supports sustainable, organic agricultural practices.  Sheryl worked as a hydrologist prior to becoming a high school chemistry teacher.

Susan Medlin, Treasurer, is an educator, cook, gardener, and food enthusiast who has actively promoted local sustainable agriculture for many years, including several years at BUGS where she developed the culinary program, and three years as treasurer of the Treasure Valley Food Coalition. She was an early promoter of backyard chickens, has worked privately with farmers, chefs and the community to increase local food consumption, and helped start the Village Table to raise money for local farm projects.

Jennifer Miller, Board Member, brings fourteen years of non-profit experience to the board, as the healthy foods and farms program director with the Northwest Center for Alternatives to Pesticides (NCAP). Prior to joining NCAP, she taught plant biology at Southwestern College in Kansas. Jennifer received her BS in biology from the University of Northern Iowa and PhD in plant physiology from The Pennsylvania State University. Her passion for the coalition’s work stems from growing up on a grass-based dairy in the rolling hills of northeast Iowa.

Elaine Kazakoff, Board Member is a 30 year resident of Boise.  She is a graduate of Boise State University and worked in Sales and Supply Chain Operations at Boise Cascade and then HP.   She has been personally committed to the local food movement for many years and believes buying local, sustainably produced food is important from an economic, and environmental perspective.  She joined the Treasure Valley Food Coalition in the fall of 2013 and is enthusiastic about the opportunity this gives her to strengthen and grow the burgeoning local food culture in the Treasure Valley.

Amy Hutchinson, Board Member, is an educator and co-founder of the Boise Urban Garden School (BUGS). As a board member of the Treasure Valley Food Coalition, she helped coordinate 2011: Year of Idaho Food to raise awareness of the many food crops that have historically been grown in Idaho. During the summers, Amy tends a large garden and hones her cooking and food preserving skills.
