Supporting a Vibrant Local Food Economy

Most of us want to make healthy choices when it comes to feeding ourselves and our families. We want to know how what we eat affects our local economy, the environment and our future. We are all familiar with food—-after all, we eat every single day.  Few know much about the system that grows,  processes, and delivers that food.  This global system brings us almost any food we want, any time we want, at a price most of us can afford.  It operates, for the most part, out of our sight and out of our control.  Such a system would be great, except that it operates almost totally on cheap fossil fuel, that food is implicated in the growing rates of diet-related diseases, and that farmers are finding it harder and harder to stay in business. The information we need to map our way to a new system that is sustainable,  healthy and robust isn’t readily available. That’s why the Treasure Valley Food Coalition is now gathering and analyzing data to help us make better decisions about what we eat and, in doing so, helping to chart a more sustainable community and food system for us all.
